Part 2 – Behind the Nudity: Who is behind the mask?

Naturist deepfake mask metaphor image: Close-up of a person wearing a red and black decorative mask, with sparkling details, highlighting their eyes.

The naturist community has always been built on trust, respect, and authenticity. Unfortunately, the rise of social media has given some people the tools to manipulate this trust. The rise of naturist deepfake images.

Recently, we were told about a profile we were following claiming to be a naturist, filled with many images and videos. At first glance, everything seemed normal and legitimate. After receiving proof showing the before and after photos where this profile had changed the face, we investigated them ourselves.

We took a few of their photos and first we used Duplichecker to do a reverse image search. And we found the original images were all of different people. So then we put the image through a few free Deepfake AI detection tools. All came back with 99%-100% Deep Fake AI image.

We felt stupid. We fell for it … again!

In our previous article, Behind the Nudity: The Rise of Catfish, we talked about the challenge of catfish in online naturism. There were a lot of comments and questions as to why someone would create a fake profile like this. What is their endgame? So we reached out to a friend who is an IT Chief Security Officer (CSO) for their opinion.

Deepfakes use advanced AI to superimpose one person’s face onto another’s body, creating an almost flawless illusion. This can be done with images, videos and GIFs. While these tools can be used for fun or creative purposes, they can also be exploited to deceive and manipulate others.

But what would drive someone to go through the trouble of creating a fake naturist profile with hundreds of altered images? Let’s explore some of the most common reasons.

Who is Behind the Mask?

1. Building a Fake Persona for Influence

Some individuals create fake profiles to gain followers. They present themselves as naturists to try to become influencers by sharing daily updates, photos, and videos. At first, this might seem harmless, but as their follower count grows, so does their perceived credibility.

Eventually, they may start promoting products, offering paid memberships, or even launching a “naturist community” where they ask for subscriptions. The trust they have built is entirely based on deception. Just think of a Patreon or Only Fans account where the person doesn’t even exist in real life. It’s all AI!

2. Social Engineering or Phishing

Fake naturist profiles can also be a tool for social engineering. For example, they might start private conversations with real naturists, gaining their trust over time. They may ask for personal information, such as favorite naturist locations, or even more sensitive details.

Once they know enough, they could impersonate the person elsewhere or use this information for other scams.

3. Selling Fake or Stolen Content

These profiles may begin offering “exclusive naturist content” to their followers through a website. Subscribers pay for images or videos that are either fake (AI-generated) or stolen from real naturists.

Victims may not even realize that they are buying content from someone who isn’t a real naturist.

4. Engaging in Catfishing

The profile might focus on one-on-one interactions, building emotional connections with unsuspecting followers. They may use flattery, false promises, or emotional manipulation to keep their targets engaged.

In some cases, they may even ask for money under false pretenses, such as needing help with “naturist trips” or “personal emergencies.”

5. Blackmail or Extortion

After building a trusting relationship, the fake profile might request personal images from a target. Once they receive them, they threaten to share these images publicly unless paid.

This cruel form of manipulation can be deeply damaging.

6. Psychological Manipulation

Not everyone is in it for money. Some individuals simply enjoy seeing how many people they can deceive. They may take pride in creating a convincing fake identity, tricking others, and feeling a sense of power from their deception.

They might even create multiple fake naturist profiles to amplify their influence.

7. Loneliness and Desire for Connection

Not every fake naturist profile is created for malicious purposes. Some are simply the result of loneliness. The person behind the profile may feel disconnected in their own life and see the naturist community as a place of acceptance and belonging. But instead of approaching it honestly, they create a fake identity, fearing rejection or feeling inadequate.

These individuals often try to maintain long conversations, seek emotional support, or attempt to join groups without offering much in return. They might not ask for money or personal details but are still misleading others about who they are.

Approaching such profiles requires a balance of caution and compassion. While it’s crucial to maintain boundaries and protect the community, it’s also worth remembering that some of these individuals may simply need genuine human connection.

Practical Safety Steps:

Here are a few safety steps to protect yourselves, and others. We used to just ask for an image with a sign as we mentioned in our last article. Now… we are concerned these could easily be Deepfake created also.

These were some recommendations:

• Ask for Verification: Don’t hesitate to request a brief, real-time video call with someone claiming to be a naturist before continuing private conversations. Real naturists should understand the need for trust and transparency.

• Use a Direct Message Script: If you are unsure, you can use a pre-written message like this:“Hi there! Just to ensure we are both safe and authentic here, I have a simple rule. Before we continue chatting, I’d love to do a brief video call, even if it’s just to wave and say hi. Naturism is about trust, and this helps ensure we are both real. I hope you understand. If that’s an issue, I’m sorry but we will not be able to communicate further.”

• Request a Real-Time Video: A brief video call where they hold up a sign, say their name, and speak a few words can be much harder to fake convincingly. Don’t request anyone do this nude for their own privacy and protection. That’s not fair to them either.

• Ask for Specific Details in the video: For example, request a specific phrase on the sign or a specific pose, making it harder for them to prepare a fake.

• Be Careful with Personal Information: Avoid sharing personal details like your full name, location, or personal email until you fully trust someone. You can use a burner email.

• Report Suspicious Profiles: If you come across a profile that you know is fake or seems suspicious, report, report, report it to the platform immediately.

• Post warnings to others: Let’s help others from getting scammed. Not saying anything leaves others in your community vulnerable.

Staying Vigilant: Trust, But Verify

The naturist community is built on authenticity and respect, but those values must be protected.

Always approach new connections with a healthy balance of openness and caution. Remember, it’s not rude to ask for verification, it’s responsible.

We all have a role in maintaining a safe, welcoming space for genuine naturists. By staying vigilant and helping each other recognize potential threats, we can ensure that the naturist community remains a place of trust and positivity.

Always prioritize your privacy and be mindful of who you interact with. Trust is a vital part of the naturist community, but that trust must be earned.

If something seems too good to be true, it just might be.

  1. Thank you for sharing your story. I never realized all the reasons why someone would misrepresent themselves. I’m just hoping that they are a minority in the online naturist community.

  2. All valid points… but it ultimately explains why the nudist/naturist online community really isn’t any different than ‘regular’ ones. Which also explains why there will never be any true online nudist communities.. theres too many fake, crooked, dishonest, etc people out there. No different than any other media platform.

    Sad, but true.

  3. The impressiveness of some deepfakes is getting better and better, but there are always tells in the image. It sucks that some people are looking to take advantage of this community, but that behavior isn’t new, but rather evolved from other types of con jobs.

  4. Thanks for these two blogs. I was vaguely aware of these risks, but you’ve certainly reinforced the need to be super-vigilant, even in what we thought were “safe” places online.

  5. Excellent information, guys. I recently was a blackmail target and it was indeed very jarring. I didn’t pay the person and I’ve not heard from them again, but it was not pleasant. I urge you all to be careful and aware.
